OralID® is an adjunctive screening device that uses fluorescence technology to aid clinicians in visualization of oral abnormalities. This technology allows to clinicians see beyond the naked eye. It is easy to use and non-threatening to patients. Dentists and hygienists can use OralID to increase the efficacy of oral exams. We recommend having this screening at least once a year.
During the OralID fluorescence screening, we are looking for dark lesions. A lack of fluorescence may indicate an abnormality. If any lesions appear dark or abnormal, we will reassess in two weeks. This allows any trauma from thermal or mechanical damage to heal.
If the area is still lacking fluorescence at two week re-evaluation visit, we will move to the next step of our protocol, referring to a specialist for further evaluation. A specialist may perform a standard biopsy and send to a pathologist, a pathologist will be able to give us a diagnostic result on what is happening with the tissue.
Ask your hygienist about the OralID cancer screening at your next visit!
